So your little one has arrived home with their first tab to read. I've attached a sheet which you can print to help, but let me explain a bit more about what it means.
Go to the JUST STARTED page to download the slow_mary_had_a_little lamb backing track. You can also watch it being played on the video page. You may need to right-click the file to be able to save it. Apple devices generally don't download at all so you may just have to stream it.
The basic rule of reading tab (the numbers on the six lines below the standard notation/ recorder music) is this:
A number on the TOP line means play the BOTTOM string
So a "0" on the top line means hit the BOTTOM (thin) string without holding the string.
A "0" on the 2nd line from the top means play the second string UP, without holding it.
Many of your children will be learning "Mary Had A Little Lamb".
The first note is a "0" on the 2nd line. They should hit the 2nd string UP (it's a thin string) without holding the string.
The next note is a 2 on the third line. This will then be the third string up but using the middle finger to hold down the string at the 2nd fret.
Most of the children should have a sticker there to help them. Good luck, and remember to be patient- the first steps are sometimes the hardest :-)
